| It was my 24th birthday today. I have had two sickeningly inefficient days basically exploring the Santa Fe, Espanola, and Taos areas. Santa Fe is a neat place though. I could possibly see myself living there for awhile. I do tire of staying in hotel rooms though -- for now. Once I've been in the woods a few days, this Motel 6 might seem pretty alright. I usually like to stay in hotels/motels, so maybe I am just fed up with driving around. Tomorrow night, I am going to camp in Pilar and meet up with the class in the morning. Then I will be getting to the real reasons I have come down here instead of just exploring. June 3-12 TA for field camp, then June 15-30 I'm staying NE of Pecos at my study area. I hope this does not curse me, but I am feeling quite prepared for the wilderness this trip.
Everyone likes geologists because it's always "their fault."
| It is looking like a rough six months for everyone's favorite geologist.
EDIT: too whiney, I should complain less I am optimistic about my problems
| I will continue on with my philosophical rantings; this time I will put Reality and Deception in a head to head battle. The truth is that Reality trumps Deception when the two collide. I see these two as an opposite pair where Deception is like a shadow, always hiding from the light that is Reality. Reality is scarce; however, and it seems like Deception and Perception dominate our minds.
This gives me a good picture of the mental players so far. Imagine a dark room with a candle in the center. The fire on the candle is reality, the dimly lit part of the room is perception. The shadow that the candle makes is deception -- darkness from light. The unlit part of the room is our next player: Ignorance
| One of my recent posts was about Perception vs Reality -- in this one I want to throw deception into the mix. Take a minute and think about what these words represent. Deception, Perception -- both have noun, verb, adjective, and adverb forms. In general, I see these as two opposite tools. Perceiving is how we take in 'reality,' (see post on Perception vs Reality) while deception is a way of distorting perceptions -- our own or others'. I think that altering perception is the primary function of deception. My thought is that deception in some cases can affect reality since our perceptions affect our actions or others' actions, and actions affect reality. Therefore, it is preferable to the reasonable person to be around honesty so that your perception of reality is not built on deception. Most of the time deception is temporary, but in many instances it can be permanent.

| I hope the year can be at least as good for me and mine as it has been so far. I celebrated the New Year in Telluride, Colorado. Dare I make a New Years resolution here and now with witnesses to hold me to it? I dare not. I am visiting Ohio from Jan 4-13. | | |
